The Software package I will be using is Autodesk Mudbox. Quoting from the Mudbox website – “Mudbox® digital painting and sculpting software provides 3D artists with an intuitive and tactile toolset for creating and modifying 3D geometry and textures.” This essentially means Mudbox is a software for digital sculpting. Autodesk Mudbox digital painting and digital sculpting software enables you to create production-ready 3D digital artwork. Mudbox offers a high-performance environment and professional-quality.

Mudbox is a proprietary computer-based 3D sculpting and painting tool. Currently developed by Autodesk, Mudbox was created by Skymatter, founded by Tibor Madjar, David Cardwell and Andrew Camenisch, former artists of Weta Digital, where it was first used to produce the 2005 Peter Jackson remake of King Kong. Mudbox's primary application is high-resolution digital sculpting, texture painting, and displacement and normal map creation, although it is also used as a design tool.

Mudbox was developed by Skymatter in New Zealand as the founders David Cardwell, Tibor Madjar and Andrew Camenisch were working on The Lord of the Rings at Weta Digital. They created the software to expand their own toolsets, and was first used as a complete product on King Kong. The beta was released in May 2006, followed by version 1.0 in mid-February 2007. On August 6, 2007, Autodesk announced the acquisition of Skymatter Inc.[3][4]

The Mudboxuser interface is a 3D environment that allows the creation of movable cameras that can be bookmarked. Models created within the program typically start as a polygon mesh that can be manipulated with a variety of different tools. A model can be subdivided to increase its resolution and the number of polygons available to sculpt with. 3D layers allow the user to store different detail passes, blending them with multiplier sliders and layer masks. Using layers the user is able to sculpt and mould their 3D model without making permanent changes.
As a detailing app, Mudbox can import and export .obj, .fbx, and .bio files, as well as its own .mud format. A typical workflow is to create a relatively simple (low polygon count) model in a 3D modeling application and then import it to Mudbox for sculpting. Subdivision of models occurs using the Catmull-Clark subdivision algorithm.
The sculpting tool set contains an assortment of brushes with adjustable falloffs.
The use of 3D layers allows for design visualization, non-destructive sculpting, and high polygon counts. Since the layers combine additively, their ordering is unimportant for the final model and may be created arbitrarily. Curves can be created and projected on a mesh for use as precise masking. All of the standard transform and selection tools are here as well. Paint layers were added in Mudbox 2009.
Design visualization plays an important role in Mudbox's production value. Simple poly primitives can be created from within Mudbox, facilitating the creation of busts, props, terrain, etc.

Mudbox also includes stamps and stencils. Stencils work by overlaying a grayscale, or 'alpha channel' image, such as a bump map, over the mesh. The artist can then project part or all of the image's detail onto the mesh through brush strokes, providing a method to quickly sculpt surface detail.
The underlying architecture of Mudbox was updated in Mudbox 2009 to allow the sculpting of models with larger polygon counts compared to earlier versions. In Mudbox 2009 3D painting and texturing features were introduced to allow artists to paint directly on their models in 3D. In addition, features to display the model with depth of field and ambient occlusion were added for the release.
In Mudbox 2010, an application programming interface (API) was introduced via a software development kit (SDK). In addition, functionality to improve file interoperability with other 3D applications (Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max etc.) was added via the FBX file format.
Interface[edit]
Mudbox's interface includes menus, tabbed windows, and tool trays, and can be customized to a limited extent. It also provides keyboard shortcuts. The navigation in the 3D view is similar to that of Autodesk Maya.
Platforms[edit]
Earlier versions of Mudbox operate on Windows XP (32 and 64 bit), Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit), Windows 7 Professional (32 and 64 bit), Linux 64-bit and Mac OS X. The current version (Mudbox 2014) is 64 bit only, and has dropped support for Windows XP.

On February 15, 2014, Canadians Andrew Camenisch, David Cardwell and Canadian-Hungarian Tibor Madjar were honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for scientific and technical achievement for the concept and design, along with the two Hungarians, educated at Debrecen University, Csaba Kőhegyi and Imre Major for the implementation of the Mudbox software.[5]

Before I go ahead and show off my head sculpt (currently a work in progress) I would like to give a bit of background on the tools I will be using for the task in hand.
The Software package I will be using is Autodesk Mudbox. Quoting from the Mudbox website – “Mudbox® digital painting and sculpting software provides 3D artists with an intuitive and tactile toolset for creating and modifying 3D geometry and textures.” This essentially means Mudbox is a software for digital sculpting

Like many 3D Sculpting software Mudbox sculpts using different tools and brushes you can change the size, strength of your brush and even use a “stamp image” which from what i understanding uses a normal map of some sort? I’m not sure exactly but you can see the “stamp image” function on the top right of the cube image below for a visual understanding.
The whole idea behind sculpting digitally, Mudbox in particular, is that you are using virtual clay, likewise the tools can add “clay” or subtract it from the sculpture very similar to real clay sculpting.

Traditional Sculpting is actually quite prevalent in the entertainment and industrial design. If you look at behind the scenes in VFX heavy movies. you can often see clay sculptures that 3D artists would have created to guide the film.
Also in the automotive industry manufacturers hire designers to create sculpts to envision 2D concept drawings into a 3D reality. example of a car sculpture below.

Within Mudbox you are given a selection of sculpting tools like the ones shown here
The thing I like about Mudbox is that the tools are fairly self-explanatory by going off the icons alone. This personally made it very easy to start sculpting which makes the software a lot more accessible to learn and come to grips with compared Pixologic’s Zbrush which i will go into later on.
To demonstrate the tools I imported a cube into Mudbox and played around with the different types such as sculpt, smooth, grab etc.
The the cube itself is quite crude however that does not matter as I’m only using it to show off how sculpting works

Why Sculpt and not use a 3d package like 3DS or Maya?

Compared to traditional modelling Sculpting can create details that otherwise would be very difficult or impossible to create in a traditional 3D techniques. This makes it very appealing to those who want to achieve photorealistic, hyperrealistic results (a lot of the triple a companies such as EA Sports and so on)

As you can see in the picture above the artist has made these look incredibly realistic thanks to the 3d sculpting tools, creating this in a traditional 3d setup alone would be near, if not impossible because of way they handle 3d using polygonal modelling.
Digital sculpting is not just limited to realism it can also be used to create stylised and cartoony if desired results. an example of this would be Edge of Reality’s Loadout which would have used 3D sculpting in some way.
Digital sculpting is also essential for high poly organic modelling (modelling objects such as animals and other things that would create curves and irregular surfaces compared to hard surface) for games when used with other 3D modelling and texturing techniques such as displacement and normal mapping. This can greatly achieve the illusion of realism (if needed) onto lower poly meshes this would also include texture baking and ambient occlusion maps.
For example you would have a low poly mesh of a character in Maya you would then export it into a sculpting software such as Mudbox, Zbrush even 3D Coat and then create a sculpture that includes very fine details which would use an extremely high poly count some would be that high if imported into a game engine would make the framerate drop that much it becomes unplayable even on high end hardware. Game developers don’t want this so they will create normal maps, bump maps and bake textures to achieve a very similar detail but onto a model with a reputable polycount.
What Software Should I use to sculpt?
While there can be a lot of debate over what tools you use most of the time is boils down to what software you prefer and the workflow you use. Asking the question “Should i use mudbox or Zbrush?” is the same as asking whether you should use 3ds or maya.

both have their pros and cons and people will have different opinions due to their personal preference relating to the tools.
Wirecast pro 12 0 0 download free. Although i find mudbox easier to work with than Zbrush I believe that Zbrush is used more by the Industry than mudbox perhaps this is due to Mudbox being the newer software and therefore not used as much because professional artists don’t have the mileage in it or they wouldn’t need to learn a new program because they are already comfortable with a one they use already. Also Mudbox is the software that is installed onto the college computers so it would make more sense to sculpt with mudbox as it saves the need to deal with file transfers and other mess.
